The return to work on Monday looms over me, but I’m not too unhappy. I love my job and working with the young. It’s just the tiredness that gets me down. As I’m not a natural-born early-riser, I’ve decided I’ll try and have everything done before going to bed the night before (bath, make sandwich, etc.) and endeavour to get up a bit later so that I catch more sleep. I always try and leave the house by 7.45 otherwise the traffic is horrendous. I usually rise at 6 a.m. and dawdle. Let’s see if I can get up at 7 o’clock and be off on time!

I’m busy tidying up the house and garden today. Having finished The Dragon’s Tail which I’ll review in my next post (brilliant!), I’ve been planning the last third of the WIP in between prep for school, etc. Tomorrow I’m off to Bristol for a “hair day” i.e. trim and highlights. Another aspect of working with the young is that it keeps you on your toes re. looking your best for they notice everything.

Having stayed away for three nights, Charlie Cat has been around every day now since coming home on Sunday. It would be wonderful if he could become more of a house-cat. That would please Sophie who loves to "mother" him. (I think he quite enjoys it when she washes him.) And I wouldn't worry about him so much when he goes off on one of his hunting trips.

Now I’ll regale you with another instalment of my holiday in Italy. We decided to visit Ravenna because of its superb mosaics, but we were pleasantly surprised by the town itself. In spite of choosing to go there over Ferragosto, which is a hot and busy time of year, it wasn’t unbearably crowded although it was hot and humid and we were grateful for our air-conditioned hotel room. There are some beautiful old streets, peaceful piazzas, interesting shops and good restaurants.

Are you up for a potted history of Ravenna? Here goes! The city rose to power in the 1^st Century BC under the Roman Emperor Augustus, who built a port and naval base at nearby Classe. When Rome’s power dwindled, Ravenna was made the capital of the Western Empire (AD402) and it retained its role during the Ostrogoth and Byzantine rule in the 5^th and 6^th Centuries. Ravenna is famous for its early Christian mosaics, which span the years of Roman and Byzantine government. I'll leave you with some pics. Have a great weekend! THE GOOD SHEPHERD mosaic, dating from 430, adorns the tiny Mausoleum of Galla Placidia.

 
The cupula of the late 5^th Century ARIAN BAPTISTRY has a mosaic showing the Apostles ringed around a centrepiece depicting the Baptism of Christ.

 

SAN VITALE’S apse mosaics (526-547) show Christ, S. Vitale (being handed a martyr’s crown), two angels and Bishop Ecclesius, who began the church.

SANT’APOLLINARE NUOVO is a 6^th Century church named after Ravenna’s first bishop. There are two magnificent rows of mosaics down the nave, showing processions of martyrs and virgins bearing gifts for Christ and the Virgin.

 

DANTE’S TOMB. The “supreme poet” was exiled from his home town of Florence and eventually found refuge in Ravenna, where he died in 1321.

Hi Siobhan, the dates of those mosaics are amazing to me! The beautiful things humans create that last longer than they could ever have imagined. Simply beautiful! I always enjoy your synopsis of history! Dante's tomb must have been so interesting to see. I was able to visit the home and tomb of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, both great men in their own right but Imagine Dante lived in the 1300's. Italy has so much history and gorgeous things to see. I wish to visit there some day w/my family! Anyway, I'm glad Charlie cat is home for a while. It's tough to keep our Tiger from wanting to wander off but he comes home every "day" to sleep all day and then he is out and about all night. What a life he has! haha. I'm not a natural born early riser either but had to do it for years when I was working. Actually, I still have to because of my kids school. I know about traffic...California traffic is awful! Yes, I hope my holiday in Italy is as wonderful as yours. Apart from a very short visit to Venice, I've only ever stayed in the south so the lakes will be a whole new experience.
