I'm posting this from our hotel in Bologna. I've taken lots of photos and will post a collage when we get back to Mum's. I haven't been able to get online there for the past week 'cos, when we arrived, her laptop was off being repaired. Someone left it connected to the internet and the modem burnt out during a thunderstorm!
This is a beautiful city famous for its fabulous food. Needless to say, being the greedy pig that I am, we have taken full advantage of eating out. We got here late yesterday afternoon after stopping in the Eugean Hills near Padova to view the house where Petrarca spent his last years and passed away. A gorgeous, tranquil place. Pics will be posted later! This morning we went on a open-top bus ride of the city which gave us an overview. Then we visited the archeological museum which has some interesting Egyptian, Etruscan and Roman artefacts. Afterwards, we strolled around the old city taking lots of photos. We chilled in the afternoon and then went out for another walk and I bought some shoes. You HAVE to buy shoes in Italy - they have the best shoe shops in the world! This evening we're eating out again. We haven't sampled the famous bolognese sauce yet so that's what we're having - probably lasagne.
Tomorrow we've got a long drive down the Adriatic Coast and then inland from Pedaso to a little village in Le Marche where some friends have converted an old house. We'll be staying with them for three days before heading off to Ravenna on Monday. I'll post again from the hotel there.
The celebrations for my sister and brother-in-law were wonderful. It was such a lovely time for all the family to be together and for friends who came to their wedding thirty years ago to meet up. Sister and BIL remade their vows in the same little church they were married in. The night before we had a party for Clodagh's 50th and then there was another party the next night for their wedding anniversary. So we were a bit tired when we got here and it's been nice to be just the two of us. Very relaxing which is what holidays are all about.
